Nursery School
Keep up to date with all the news happening in school at the moment.
It has been lovely to welcome everyone back to nursery after the Easter break. The children have been sharing what they did in the holidays and we have been talking about the importance of listening carefully to the person who is speaking. We have been exploring what is means to care for the environment this week and have been reusing materials for junk modelling in the art studio. We have talked about how we can reduce, reuse and recycle materials ♻️ The children have been looking for insects and bugs in the garden this week. They have been looking under logs and branches and have discovered all sorts of living things! They have created bug hotels using the loose parts in nursery and have been finding out about different insects using information books and the iPads. We have started to read ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ which will be one of our core stories this term. The children are beginning to differentiate between different bugs and are starting to use the appropriate names for them. The role play area has become a cafe this week and the children have been exploring different roles. They have been developing their understanding that print has meaning as they take orders and write receipts for customers. They are using language around money and are exploring amounts as customers make orders.
We have been exploring lots of red activities today for Red Nose Day! It has been lovely to see lots of the children join in and wear red today. We have been busy this week exploring clay in the art studio. The children have been creating their own Colour Monster clay models and have been learning about texture, joining techniques and how to manipulate the clay. We have been so impressed with the care and attention the children have given to their models. Each one is different and full of personality! We have also been exploring the stories ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and ‘Jasper’s Beanstalk’. The children have helped to create a castle in the role play area and we have observed some wonderful storytelling from the children as they they take on different roles. In the garden this week the children have been planting seeds and taking care of our plants. There have been lots of discussions around what plants need to grow and how we care for them. We have set up a garden centre under our new outdoor structure and the children have explored the roles of customer and shopkeeper as they sell the different items. We have observed lots of interest in buried treasure this week which has led to map making and treasure hunts! The children have been creating different marks using pens and pencils and are giving meaning to the marks that they make. There has also been lots of interest in physical activities involving climbing and jumping. The children have helped to create an obstacle course in the garden where they can challenge their physical skills and assess risk as they move around, over and through obstacles. As we continue to explore the season of spring we have started to discuss Easter and look forward to finding out about Easter traditions and celebrations next week 🐣
Dydd Gwyl Dewi Hapus! We had a wonderful time on Monday celebrating St David's Day. Many of the children came to nursery dressed in traditional outfits or wearing something red. We had a wide range of activities for the children to explore which linked to traditional welsh customs. The children helped to make some welsh cakes which involved following a recipe, measuring ingredients and rolling and cutting the mixture. Once cooked we all got to taste how delicious they were! We have continued to learn a variety of welsh songs and discussed how to name feelings in welsh. They particularly enjoyed singing "Mr hapus ydw i". Following on from St David's Day we continued the interest in cooking and the children made some cawl. They were very careful when peeling and cutting the vegetables ready to put in the pot. Most children were able to name vegetables like carrot and potato but we are reinforcing the names of other vegetables such as parsnip, suede and leek. Once again lots of talk about where the vegetables came from and we have been exploring a number of information books about gardening and growing vegetables. In the garden the children have been helping to clear our vegetable patch ready for planting. Lots of helpers using spades, wheelbarrows and brushes to problem solve how to move bits from the patch to the compost. We have new structure going up in the garden so there was much excitement when the builders came on Wednesday to put it together. The children had many thoughts about what it could be..."It's a treehouse" "It's a structure" "It's a dinosaur"...we will have to wait and see when it is finished!
We have continued with our core story 'The Colour Monster' this week. The children have created some beautiful artwork linked to the story, really maintaining attention and thinking carefully about what they wanted to do. We have started to also explore the story 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. Spring songs this term include I dig my garden, Sleeping bunnies, Five little peas and Chick chick chicken.
It has been wonderful to welcome the children back to nursery this week. We are so proud of all of them and think they have done so well to come back and follow the usual nursery routines. This week they have really enjoyed seeing their friends and we have observed lots of lovely cooperative play as they seek out others to share a range of experiences. Many children have been eager to get outside and explore our garden and some have started to notice the first signs of spring. Fairtrade Fortnight is between 22nd February and 8th March. We have been learning about what Fairtrade means, have set up our own Fairtrade shop and tasted some Fairtrade foods. Lots of interest in our role play shop as the children took on the roles of customer and shopkeeper. They are beginning to use mathematical language within their play as they explore money and amounts. There have been lots of questions about where our foods come from which has led to conversations about how we grow foods.
One of our Core Stories this half term is 'The Colour Monster' and the children have been learning to identify different feelings and emotions within the story. As they become more familiar with the story they are able to talk about what happens with confidence and link the emotions to events that are happening within the setting.
It has been a busy week in nursery. The children have been creating lovely cards and gifts for a special day on Sunday. We hope you like them! We have continued the interest in planting and have discussed what plants need to grow. The children have been on a spring walk and looked out for early signs of spring. Some of the children took photographs and have created a spring book for the other children to read. We have talked about the new life we see in spring time and the children have enjoyed using the farm small world to support their understanding. We have been trying to match animals to their young and are learning the names for these. The weather has been wet and windy at times and the children have been excited about exploring the water and puddles in the garden. They are developing their independence in putting on the waterproofs and we are encouraging everybody to have a go on their own first. The mud kitchen has been really popular with a mixture of mud pies, potions and soups! Lots of mathematical language being used as they select the appropriate size pans, discuss weight and capacity and talk about amounts. We have also enjoyed exploring watercolours in the art area this week and have experimented with colour and shade. The children are better understanding the process of using the watercolours and how it differs to our usual paints. We have continued to read our core readers for this term and have really enjoyed learning the spring songs. It has been lovely to welcome more children in the setting and we are really looking forward to getting to know them more 😊
