Nursery School
Keep up to date with all the news happening in school at the moment.
Leading up to the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, we have been finding out about Kings, Queens and castles. On Monday, a group of us went to visit Cardiff Castle. We explored the grounds and noticed the different parts of the castle as we walked. We went inside and were amazed to see all of the animal carvings. There were so many! We even climbed all of the steps up to the Keep on the hill! Following our trip, we converted our home corner into a castle, which sparked the children's idea to have a 'Queen's party'. The children realised we needed a cake for the party so we wrote a shopping list for the ingredients, walked to the local shop to buy them and when we returned we baked a delicious Victoria sponge together! The following day we had our 'Queen's tea party', with cake and 'tea' from real china cups... just like the Queen! To end the week, on Friday a group of children had a mini trip to the local trampoline park. Perfect for our energetic friends! Another busy week at Tremorfa Nursery.
What a busy week we have had! We needed new plants for our garden so on Monday a small group of us walked to Tesco. We found a trolley, chose new bedding plants and also... juice and ice cream for the walk back! On Tuesday some of us walked to the community allotment. We explored what was there, including what was growing. There was so much to see! We also helped a little with the ongoing community project. We also had a visit from the community police officers. They spent the morning playing and exploring with us in the Nursery.
This week in nursery we continue to welcome new friends to the setting. We are so proud of our children who have shown such care towards our new friends as they show them around and comfort them. We have started to explore the changing seasons as the cold weather continues. Lots of encouragement to be independent and put on their own coats, hats and gloves. Please could you continue to support us with this at home. We will be taking part in the Big Schools Bird Watch this month and have already started to explore the nursery garden for signs of different species. We will be sending out a number of activities linked to bird watching throughout the month so please have a look and see if anything interests your child.
This week in nursery it has been lovely to welcome the children back and hear all about their holidays. We have also started to welcome some new children to the setting and are helping them to settle in and make new friendships.
Another very busy week in nursery this week. We are very excited to share that we have achieved our Rights Respecting School Silver Award! We are so proud of all of the children and the hard work they have done to learn about and share their knowledge of children’s rights. We hope to properly celebrate with you all in the new year! Also a huge thank you to those who supported our swap shop this week. We have been trying to help the children in learning about the benefits of recycling and reusing and it’s wonderful we are able to support such wonderful causes. This week in nursery we have started to learn all about the Christian celebration of Christmas. The children have been listening to the Nativity story and learning a variety of Christmas songs. These have been uploaded onto the activity area of the Seesaw app so that you can learn them with your children. We hope that you can join us for our Christmas stay and play session for a magical singalong. This week the children have been using their amazing talents to design their own wrapping paper and have been getting festive in the role play area.
Our rights respecting school focus in the coming weeks will be:
- I have the right to rest and play
- I have the right to my own beliefs
This week the children have been fascinated with our new OHP. They have been exploring light and shadows using their own body and then using different resources within nursery. In the garden the donated tyres have been a huge hit. The children have worked alongside the staff to set up an obstacle course which is developing their physical skills such as climbing, balancing and jumping. The builders yard has also seen lots of interest with the children beginning to plan out their creations and work as a team to overcome challenge. We have been reading ‘Owl Babies’ which is one of our core stories this term. The children acted out the story in one of our helicopter storytelling sessions. We have some budding actors in the nursery! Next week we will start to learn about the celebration of Christmas. We will explore the Christmas story and learn some traditional Christmas songs. We will be posting these on seesaw and hope that you can learn them with your child. We have continued to learn about different children rights and have revisited the right to be safe, the right to be healthy and the fact that rights are for everyone! Next week we will be focusing on the right to rest and play and the right to our own beliefs and to have these respected. As always it would be really helpful if you could talk about these at home too.
It has been lovely to welcome the children back this week! There has been lots of talk about fireworks as the children share their experiences of bonfire night. We have continued to talk about the right to be safe and the children have shared their thoughts about this in regards to bonfire night, at home, at school and out and about. This has let to an interest in people who help us in the community. We have been exploring books about police, firefighters, doctors and nurses. The children are developing an understanding of these different roles and how they protect us and help us. They have set up their own doctors role play and have been using their own experiences within their play as they bandage broken arms, check temperatures and write prescriptions. Dates for next week: Wednesday 17th November- We will be celebrating World Children’s Day. We will have lots of blue activities linked to the colours of Unicef and the Rights of the child. Children are welcome to come to nursery in something blue. Friday 19th November- Children in Need Day. We will be raising money for this worthwhile cause and welcome children to dress up in something wacky or colourful on the day. We will also be selling cakes and would welcome any shop bought cake donations to go towards this.
Another busy week at Tremorfa Nursery School! The children have helped to set up their own pumpkin patch in the garden. There are a variety of different pumpkins of different shapes, sizes and colours. The children have been categorising them by size and setting a price for each. Lots of lovely language around size as they widen their vocabulary from big and small. We are supporting the children to use language around money such as pounds and pence. They have also been investigating the pumpkins further as they opened up a pumpkin to discover what was inside. We have set up our class charter for our Rights Respecting School work. Children have agreed that the articles chosen are important and relevant to our nursery. They include recognising that all children have rights, that they all have a right to be safe, they all have a right to be healthy and they all have a right to be listened to. We will send out more information on this within the activity section of Seesaw. In the art studio the children have been looking closely at their features as they do some lovely observational painting. They are beginning to recognise that we all have similarities and differences and they are starting to talk about these as a group. Please take a look at the activities sent out this week. We would really appreciate any family photographs and staff would be happy to print them in school. We will also be exploring One World Week next week. If you would like to share anything about your home traditions we would love you to send some information in. This could be as simple as a traditional recipe, song or story.
We have had another busy week in nursery this week. The children have been listening to the story ‘The Little Red Hen’ and have had a go at baking bread themselves. We have also been tasting different types of bread at snack and group times. Some of the children visited the local bakery and brought back lots of ideas for our own role play bakery. The children have been using their own experiences within their play as they explore buying and selling in the bakery and act out making the different breads. We have continued to learn our autumn songs and explore the autumnal changes in our nursery garden. The interest in colour mixing has continued from last week and the children have enjoyed experimenting with the powder paints in the garden. They have made some beautiful patterns!
This week in nursery the children have extended their interest in cooking and used real life fruits and vegetables in the home corner and muddy kitchen outside. They have loved the opportunity to explore real foods and this has sparked their imagination as they act out making recipes, baking cakes and soups! Lots of mathematical language as they talk about amounts, measuring and number of people they are cooking for. We have also used vegetables to print in the art studio this week. We are consolidating learning and reinforcing the name of vegetables. the children have also enjoyed colour mixing and are beginning to recognise that they can mix colours to make a new one. Forest school sessions have started for the first group of children and this has been a wonderful opportunity for them to experience the natural world around them. We have continued to read our core stories and sing our rhymes. You can find a list of these in the children's area of the website. We are reading The Little Red Hen and hope to do some baking and food tasting next week!
