This week has seen the introduction of seasonal vegetables. The children were excited to begin exploring pumpkins in both the indoor and outdoor environment, and a variety of vegetables in the home corner. We used lots of mathematical language when looking at the vegetables, for example long, short, round and heavy. We were interested in exploring using our senses when we cut the vegetables open to look, feel and smell them. The children have been busy making our very own scarecrow for the garden, using straw to stuff the clothes and attach pieces together using the glue gun. We were very shocked to find our dinosaur eggs had hatched this week, so we have had lots of dinosaur hunts in the garden and we used our problem solving skills to think of ways to find them, which led to building 'web-like' traps around the garden using string. We have continued to use our natural materials to create beautiful pieces of transient art, talking about repeating patterns, shapes and textures.

This week we have been learning about woodland creatures through stories, tap tap boxes and small world activities. We have been looking for some woodland creatures in our garden and we have spotted some squirrels climbing in our trees! We have been busy in the workshop creating our own pieces of wood work to take home with us, sawing wood and hammering nails to join pieces together. In the garden we have enjoyed observing cause and effect, pouring water down the chutes using jugs and exploring how the water falls in different ways when we move the chutes around. We have continued to learn about spiders and how/why they build their webs. Lots of the children have been on web hunts in the garden, showing awe and wonder as they looked closely at the shapes and patterns of the webs, appreciating their natural beauty.

As we continue into the first half term of the year, it is lovely to see the children settling so well into nursery life, and what a busy half term it's been! The children have enjoyed exploring the natural resources that we've found in the garden, learning about conkers and other changes that happen in autumn. This week we have been using the natural resources that we've collected to support our play, for example making cakes and potions in the mud kitchen and creating 'natural artwork' in both the indoor and outdoor environment. The children have been particularly interested in spiders, so we have been on spider hunts and had a closer look at the different shapes, patterns and sizes of spiders. Some of our core stories have been 'Aaaarrgghh, Spider!' and 'The Very Busy Spider' which the children have become familiar with and have been joining in with telling at story time. We have introduced 'Helicopter Stories' which we will be doing weekly to build upon the children's knowledge of story structure, language and imagination.
