Nursery School
Keep up to date with all the news happening in school at the moment.
This week in nursery we have continued the interest in food and have started cooking. On Monday some of the children helped to make an apple and blackberry crumble. They developed their mathematical knowledge as they measured and weighed the ingredients and observed cause and effect as they added ingredients and watched as the mixture changed. The children all got to taste the crumble and talk about what they liked/ disliked. Later in the week we also made vegetable soup. We are starting to identify a variety of vegetables and the children are exploring them through sight, touch an smell. The children who helped to make the soup developed their peeling and cutting skills as they chopped the vegetables and added them to the pot. Lots of talk about gardening and what they have for dinner! Everyone got to taste the soup and some had seconds! Some of the children went on a walk to the local library to change our library books. We have returned with a wonderful mix of books to share with our friends! Again we have welcomed new friends this week and are supporting them to settle in. A huge thank you to all the children who have been so kind, caring and helpful.
This week in nursery the interest in spiders has continued. We have set up our own giant spider web with the children using string to thread and weave around the outside shelter posts. They are starting to show great care and concern as they protect the spiders webs. They understand that the spider has taken lots of time to spin the web and we should be respectful to al creatures. There has also been an interest in building works this week and the children have helped to set up a builders yard outside. They are drawing their own architectural plans, working collaboratively and with a purpose. Lots of focus on welcoming new friends and developing social skills such as sharing with others. Some of the children have been on a walk in the local area and picked blackberries. We have started to talk about signs of autumn and harvesting food.
It has been wonderful to welcome back the children and hear all about their adventures over the summer holidays. We have started to welcome some new friends to our nursery and they are settling in well. Lots of new faces and places to explore! The garden has already started to show signs of autumn and many of the children have been fascinated by the amount of spiders outside. We have started to read 'The Very Busy Spider' by Eric Carle and this will be one of our core stories this term.
The children have continued their interest in pirates this week and have been using the pirate ship in the garden to support imaginative play. We have enhanced the muddy kitchen and the children have been making dishes for a pirate party! We have added shells, flowers, herbs, lemons, limes and coloured water. We have observed lots of mathematical language as they explore capacity and measure. We have had some very interesting creations! In the art studio this week some of the children have been making boats using the junk modelling. They have been exploring different joining techniques and have been discussing the best materials to ensure the boat floats. For those leaving for reception in September we have started to discuss transitions. We are reading the story ‘The Colour Monster goes to School’ and this has allowed us to open up conversations about how they are feeling about this change. This is a story we will be revising in the remaining weeks of nursery.
We have had a very exciting week in nursery with another visit from pirate Louby Lou! The children have been working collaboratively to create their own pirate ship using various loose parts in the garden such as blocks, wooden planks, chairs and stands. This has involved using communication skills, gross motor skills and creative thinking. From this we have observed lots of pirate role play and children have been exploring the seas, walking the plank and saving mermaids! Some of the children have developed an interest in maps and have designed their own maps to find the hidden treasure. We have been researching what a map is and what they are for. The children have been using their fine motor skills to draw their own maps and then work together to follow the map to the treasure! The children have enjoyed exploring our new beach area and have been taking turns and sharing the small world resources. We have started to read our core readers and have been talking about the summer season.
This week we have had a focus on bees with Bee Day on Thursday 20th May. The children have been learning all about the role of bees, tasted honey, made bee biscuits and have look closely at the features of a bee. They have even made some ‘Save the bees’ signs for our nursery garden. Some of the children have explored making bee hives using the blocks and we have also had sensory playdough using dandelions and lemon to make the yellow colour. The children are still developing their fine motor skills and activities such as playdough are excellent for this as they develop the strength in their hands to manipulate the dough. We have also had a focus on being kind this week. This links in with our Rights Respecting School focus on Article 19- we have a right to be safe and treated kindly. The children have been making suggestions about how we can be kind to friends and family and have been sharing books with a focus on kindness. The large scale art has continued this week as the children added more texture to the piece. They are looking closely at the original piece of art and then adding their own ideas based on this. It has been wonderful to see it all coming together and we can’t wait to share the final piece of art with you! The caterpillars arrived last week and we have been observing their progress each day. The children have shown such care when looking at them and there have been lots of ideas shared about what is happening and what might happen next. Our helicopter story session have sparked an interest in storytelling this week. Some of the children have created their own stories and have even started to make their own books. We have explored vocabulary such as author and illustrator and they have been very proud of their achievements!
We have had a very exciting week in nursery with the arrival of our caterpillars! Lots of discussions about what they were, what they eat and what might happen to them. We will continue to observe the changes each day and encourage the children to make comments and ask questions about what they see. This week we also started a large scale art project making collaborative art pieces based on artists such as Monet. The children have experimented with different ways to paint such as using hands, feet and brushes to splatter the paint. We have also been learning about the celebration of Eid this week. The children have made their own decorations, tasted foods and explored traditions such as Mehndi. We have experienced lots of rain this week and this has meant the children have been putting on and taking off waterproof clothing in the garden. It would be very helpful if you could support the develop of these skills at home by encouraging independence in dressing and undressing. This week was Mental Health Awareness Week and we have been talking to the children about how they can keep not just their body healthy but also their brains. We have discussed different feelings and talked about different ways we can help to stay positive and healthy. We have focussed on laughter and fun this week and the children have had a wonderful time!
The children have been writing their own stories during our ‘Helicopter story’ sessions this week. They have then been performing them with their group really thinking about how to portray different characters using body movements and expression. We have also acted out the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and it’s clear we have some very talented storytellers and actors! We have also been exploring the windy weather in the garden using scarves and ribbons. Lots of dancing and large scale movements as the children watched the ribbons move about. We are continuing to develop hand eye coordination and this week the children have been throwing beanbags at targets and using the bats and balls. The children are becoming more resilient and will keep trying as they develop a new skill. The interest in bugs has continued this week as the children finished off the bug house in the garden. We have found all sorts of Mini-beasts and have particularly enjoyed observing the snails in the garden this week. Some children have been exploring making spiral shapes on paper and using loose parts materials to create spirals inside. We have been learning to say snail in welsh and have also been learning how to sign snail using Makaton. The children are becoming more independent in the use of the magnifying glasses and pots. They are showing care for the different creatures and recognise the need to keep the safe. We have noticed an interest in fairies and so have started to create a small world fairy area within the nursery with the help of the children. We look forward to seeing where this interest takes us!
It has been another busy week in nursery. We have had lots of fine motor activities available for the children to engage with this week. These will support the children to develop strength and coordination in their hands. In the Art Studio children have been painting with tweezers and cotton balls. We have also been exploring puzzles, playdough, tower building and construction. We have been talking about colours and patterns. Distinguishing between different colours as well as colour matching. The children have been busy cooking this week making cinnamon swirls and ladybird biscuits. They have listened carefully and followed simple instructions and talked about the changes that were happening as they baked. We have continued the interest in making bug houses. Last week the children had started to draw their own plans and this week they started to put them into action. Lots of discussions about what materials we should use and why. The children have been using their own ideas as well as following instructions. This will be an ongoing project for the garden. We have continued with yoga and this week have been taking about what it means to feel calm. The children have been developing their gross motor skills as they move their body into the different positions.
We have had such glorious weather this week and this has meant lots of children have spent time in the garden. We have continued the interest in minibeasts and the children are learning to use resources such as magnifying glasses and viewing pots with care. They are also learning to show care and concern for living things and to leave logs and stones as they found them when finished. We have been discussing similarities and differences between minibeasts and have started to sort them into categories. Some of the children have used the playdough to create their own minibeasts as they develop their fine motor control and hand eye coordination and observational skills. The children have explored movement and have been moving like worms, spiders, caterpillars and bees. They are developing their spatial awareness and gross motor skills. The interest in bug hotels has continued and many of the children have started to draw plans for their own. Daisy has been supporting children in the wood working area this week and this has been a huge hit with the children! On April 22nd we celebrated Earth Day! Throughout the week we have been discussing how we can care for our planet and have shared our ideas during group time. Lots of the children have recognised what we already do but there were lots of lovely ideas we can put in place too. We have read stories about caring for our world and we have explored the role of recycling and have sorted recycling materials. We would love to hear any ideas of things you do at home 📸
